Adding Justice to Public Safety

“Public safety” is often used to defend unjust practices of the police. What tends to get forgetten is an essential component to creating a truly safe public: justice. Particularly, racial justice is not considered. The Law Enforcement Action Group recently transformed into the Santa Cruz County Task Force on Justice and Public Safety to bring light to the racial discrimination inherent in the juvenile “justice” system, most evident in the racial disparities in juvenile detention centers. It is their current mission to implement reforms that prevent the increased incarceration of youth of color and create alternatives to detaining youth. If you’d like to get involved with this necessary work of undoing racism in the juvenile justice system, please contact Yesenia Molina by email or phone 831-425-4500.
